Arianna Huffington recently raised eyebrows with her latest project, “The Sleep Revolution.”
Huffington wants to change the way we approach the concept of sleep, and her new book “The Sleep Resolution” just made its debut on the New York Times Best Seller list at number two for the week of April 24.
We may be living through the most sleep-deprived era of human history. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 50 to 70 million Americans are struggling with chronic sleep or wakefulness disorders at any given time. Even many of us without diagnosable sleep disorders have unhealthy sleep hygiene. Though we’re supposed to get at least seven hours of shuteye nightly, a 2011 CDC survey found that 35% of us sleep less than seven hours regularly.
In “The Sleep Revolution,” Huffington wants to put an end to the bad habits keeping us up at night.
“You don’t just drop children into bed. You kind of have a little ritual: You give them a bath, put them in their PJs, read them a little something,” Huffington told re/code. “We need to create a ritual for ourselves…Even if it’s five minutes before you turn off the lights, turn off your devices and charge them outside the bedroom.”
If you want to get a better night’s sleep, then one of the most important things you can do is to avoid using technology right before getting into bed. In addition, experts say it’s important to stick to a regular sleep schedule and avoid drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages in the afternoon.
