Too Much Sleep or Not Enough?

Some people sleep too much and some don’t get enough because of things like busy schedules, sickness or just not having a good adjustable bed to support your back. If you are one of the people that experiences a sleeping problem, you could be at risk.

 

Getting the right amount of sleep is extremely important to promote good health. Even if you are at a young age and you are healthy, if you have poor sleep habits you are more susceptible to poor health.

 

A study, at the Center for Cohort Studies at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital and Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea tested over 47,000 middle aged men and women on how well they slept. The test measured the amount of calcium in the arteries of their heart as it is one of the warning signs for heart disease.

 

Adults who slept less than 5 hours a night had 50% more calcium in their arteries than those that slept 7. Those that slept 9 hours or more had worse outcomes with 70% more calcium than those who slept 7.

 

The sleep quality made a difference too, where adults who reported poor sleep had 20% more calcium than those who had interrupted sleep.

 

This study was very helpful to health-care providers and doctors to discuss sleep habits with their patients to detect early oncoming health problems.
