How Do You Get a Good Night Sleep? When Is the Last Time You Had One?

Did you know that a human can survive longer without food or water than without sleep? In case that is something you did not know, sleep is one of the most important things that we can do to keep our bodies running efficiently. Without sleep, our brain functions shut down, we stop eating right, cognitive abilities are at a fraction of what they are normally, and decision making is impaired. Aside from breathing, sleep is the next most important function that we must facilitate.

As breathing is an involuntary physiological response. However, sleeping is the most important aspect of our health that we have control over. And yet very many people do not know of ways to get a good night sleep. Schedules can be irregular, but there are factors that can help to assure a better night of sleep.

First and foremost, avoid anything overly stimulating before bed. This can be alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, exercise, a cold shower, or even just lying in bed and watching television. Avoid heavy or rich foods at least two hours before bed, and try not to drink too many liquids beforehand, either.

Make sure your bedroom is ideal. You may want to place up sleep curtains or wear a mask so that you are not awakened prematurely with sunlight. You also may want to try running fan or white noise machine or app is ideal to lull you in, and keep you in a deeper sleep. Make sure that you have enough blankets to start out with so that you do not wake up due to being cold in the middle of the night. Try to find a happy medium with fresh air and enough warmth with blankets.

Your pillows and mattress can make a significant difference in how you sleep as well. Depending on your typical style, you can get a pillow that best suits your favorite sleeping position. One of the best types of mattresses is an adjustable bed, such as a dual king adjustable bed. It gives you and your partner plenty of room to sleep comfortably, but a dual adjustable bed also allows either of you to adjust the side of the bed accordingly. Like hospital beds, dual king adjustable beds can lift the legs and head of the mattress, but also offer much more control over what parts are raised and lowered, offering the ultimate in comfort.

Whether it is buying blackout curtains, or a dual king adjustable bed, make sure that you are setting yourself up for success for when you sleep. Remember, sleeping is your recharge time. Imagine only plugging in your cell phone for an hour at a time. Eventually you would run out.
