Back pain is a major problem affecting many people. In fact, experts estimate that a whopping 80% of the population will experience back pain at some point in time, and low back pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Plus, if you’ve suffered from even mild back low back pain, you probably already know that it can inhibit sleep and therefore affect almost every area of your life. Low back pain (along with TMJ and headaches) are the leading medical issues that prevent sleep, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Craftmatic® Adjustable Beds equipped with optional heat and massage may provide temporary relief from low back pain.
The Challenges of Low Back Pain
Chronic low back pain can be difficult to treat — especially given information that has recently come to light regarding the over-the-counter pain medication many people have been using to treat that pain. One study published this year found that acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, is no better for low back pain than a placebo and may pose a risk to liver function (see the British Medical Journal, Feb. 4, 2015).
And in July, the Food and Drug Administration strengthened its warning on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and naproxen — Advil and Aleve — saying that they can lead to heart attack and stroke even when not taken for an extended period of time. While you’d want to discuss any medication choices with your doctor, of course, these findings at least suggest that it may be beneficial for many people to seek out alternative sources of relief for their low back pain.
Adjustable Beds and Low Back Pain
How are adjustable beds and low back pain connected? For some people, the features offered by adjustable bed mattresses may provide temporary relief from low back pain. The National Sleep Foundation has stated that an adjustable bed can take pressure off areas of the body that cause discomfort during sleep, and having a slight incline at the head or foot of your bed can prevent you from curling up into a position that will end up causing you pain. There are many sizes of adjustable beds and you can choose from and different styles (including memory foam), so you’ll be able to find the one that’s most comfortable for you.
